It has retractable doors for no apparent reason. But that means all the controls look cheap and are in weird spots and it’s hard to get in or out.
It has plastic body panels so you can swap them easily. You can’t swap them easily. And changing color doesn’t work because the car is full of body-color parts both inside and out. And the panels all crack because they’re plastic.
It is damn cool. But it’s a design disaster.

It’s also ugly. There, I said it.

My thoughts exactly. It’s the most interesting car BMW ever made (no, Glas-BMWs and Isettas aren’t proper BMWs), but damn is it stupid. I think that’s what made it interesting really.

And as I recall, the Z8 performed worse than the E39 M5 with which it shared most mechanical gubbins.

It genuinely is.

It’s ugly. It has all the parts of an e30, but I’d take a nice e30 325is every day of the week over the Z1. That being said, I do get excited when I see a Z1.

I love that it exists, just because it’s so batshit, but I wouldn’t ever want one

The Z1 was very of it’s time.

It’s oh so pretty. But according to Clarkson, it drives like this:
Granted Scanias don’t handle poorly for what they are...

While I agree with you, it’s still cool to see one. Saw one in person a few years back when I was in Germany, just chilling out on the street.
Now the cost back in the day??? Are you kidding me BMW!? This or a 911, seems like an easy choice.

It’s ugly, not very sporting, and I’d own one if the prices weren’t so ridiculous.

Just needs more Alpina.

I don’t think it is. It’s very plain though, except the doors. Just what you’d expect a boring roadster with BMW cues to look like.

It certainly is. But it’s dumb as a bag of hammers. The only reason we still talk about it is because of how weird it is.

I like the Z8 at lot more. It’s an interesting design without relying on a single gimmick. The Z1 is a plain design with a single gimmick that ruins most of the design.

Well the E30 seems to be a nice design. It doesn’t have all the crazy compromises. I like coupes so I’d probably take the Z1 - at least it does present as a far more modern car.

I think it was ahead of its time - look at the E30 it’s based on!
But it manages to be of it’s time too.

I’ve never seen one. I may never see one. :(
I know, insane. They really messed it up. The good ideas made it worse, and priced the car out of the market.
